Special exhibition in the Augusteum

From August 23 to November 30, 2025, the Oldenburg State Museum will host the first major exhibition on the Mannerist sculptor Ludwig Münstermann. Numerous works from the museum's collection will be on public display for the first time, complemented by loans from major institutions in Germany.

He was a master of exaggeration and extremes, an exceptionally talented craftsman, and highly regarded by his clients - and yet Ludwig Münstermann (c. 1575-1637/38) has remained largely unknown both within art history and to a wider audience.

Despite their age and their sometimes unfamiliar content, Münstermann's expressive sculptures, made out of wood or stone, are remarkably relevant today. They question the principles of human existence and touch viewers on a deep emotional level. Rugged physiognomies, elongated limbs, and dramatic gestures testify to Münstermann's desire to express emotions in an intensified form.

With his workshop, Münstermann created numerous altars, pulpits, and baptismal fonts for churches in the Oldenburg region, most of which have been preserved to this day. Based on its exhibited pieces and cooperating with local parishes, the show repeatedly refers to this special cultural treasure of the region, which is worth rediscovering.
